Invisible borders can be crippling.
We each have a place inside of us where we feel awesome, excited, and even safe. But when it comes to the idea of making a lasting change in this world, this place is terrifying.
It’s that invisible border that separates us from the fear of the unknown, dreaming about tomorrow, and actually stepping out in the world to do big things.
Where is this place of crippling and hidden borders, that can steal dreams? Our comfort zone.
Many people say that they want to make an impact in the world. They dream of huge things. They want to create a lasting change. But you can’t do that from inside the borders of your comfort zone.
Why is it that when we press into this invisible border, daring to break out, that we become paralyzed and feel trapped? I’ve been there before, hoping for more when the fear of the unknown caused me to shrink back into my safe little bubble.
Inside this invisible border is the capital city of your self esteem and Fear is the governor. While you secretly make plans to break free, Fear shows up with his goon named Doubt. As you start to press into your invisible border with hopes of changing the world, they will speak up and they will make you ask questions like these:
If I step out there, people will see me. They will see that I am suddenly doing something different than they have known me to do. What will people say when I start doing this new thing that I’ve never done before?
What if I fail?
What if I succeed?
But Fear and Doubt have a weakness. Their reach only goes to the edge of the invisible border of your comfort zone. How do you beat them? How do you chase after something that can change the world?
You take one step.
Just one step outside.
Suddenly your comfort zone grows. Your border stretches and each time you take that one step, it will get bigger and bigger. It’s an ever changing border. Fear and Doubt will constantly try to keep you within those walls and each time they do, you just have to take one step outside.
Your dream matters. Your hopes are important. The world needs you to press into that invisible border and to beat up Fear and his buddy Doubt. They’ll keep showing up and you’ll keep winning because you have the potential to change the world.
All you have to do is take one step.
What is something you can do today that will move you outside of your comfort zone? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
