Several weeks ago I read a blog post from Jon Acuff about going on an adventure. There was talk of machetes and passports and dragons so naturally I was all in. The signup window was only for 24 hours and you had no time to ask questions. It was either sign-up, jump in the deep end, or be left sitting at home wondering what this adventure may look like.
I got the email soon after asking me to join this closed Facebook group called “The Start Experiment.” Clicking on that link sent me to a page with 2,600 other people who were also ready to go on an adventure. Considering that Jon has a gazillion people read his blog everyday that small number surprised me. 2,600 people is a pretty small and exclusive group out of the “tribe” that is Jon Acuff.
It was still pretty unclear what this adventure was. We were told we’d receive exclusive content from Jon once a day for 24 days. We knew that this was based around his new book Start. What we didn’t know is why we were gathered in a group on Facebook. Couldn’t Jon have just emailed us this exclusive content? What type of adventure is this? What did I get myself into?
And then I started to see everything unfold. I learned what happens when you put up a fence around a community and say, “you guys are The Start Experiment.” I watched what a group of people who are ready to be intentional about chasing their dreams can accomplish when put in a room with other people who are tired of settling for average.
Sure there is somehow this mystical conversation floating around about unicorns, ligers, glitter, and the randomness of planning a wedding and a picnic. But there is also a bond that can only truly be explained if you’re in the group. There is a level of encouragement that I’ve never seen before. There is a genuine desire to see other people succeed and to be awesome.
I’ve seen writers develop content that they never would have been able to come up with had they not been a part of this community. I’ve seen business owners get intentional about how they will grow to reach more customers. Songwriters and musicians that normally sit in the background are for the first time sharing their voices with the world. I even witnessed a successful product launch in the form of Beardsauce, that probably wouldn’t have happened without The Start Experiment. We all got to witness the awesomeness of a new website go from conception to launch in just a 5 day period called Frankenstart.com. And these are just a few stories that have taken place over the last few weeks.
I learned there is power in Community.
What’s great about The Start Experiment is it’s only 24 days long. If you missed out on the adventure the first time around, just keep an eye out on JonAcuff.com because there will be another 24 hour window for you to jump in the deep end and join this powerful community that punches fear in the face and chases after a life of awesome.
When you put a fence up around a group of people and say, “You are _______,” instantly community is formed. This is why Dave Ramsey’s FPU program works so well. There’s few other financial courses that have so much emphasis on building community with other people who are going through the same things with money that you are. The group naturally encourages each other and holds each other accountable like no one from the outside will be able to do. It’s why lifegroups and small groups at churches work so well.
If you’re looking to get more awesome as a parent, or spouse, or with money, or with your career, or in your spiritual life, then find a community that can wrap around you. You’ll experience the power to accomplish more than you ever thought you could do.
Question: What community are you plugged into? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
